If you have a pension in a different pension scheme, you might want to transfer it into the firefighters’ pension scheme 2015.
The transfer process
What to do
You must apply to transfer in a pension from a different scheme.

Contact your administrator requesting to transfer in a pension.
- 02.
Your administrator will let you know what information they need to investigate the transfer.
- 03.
Depending on the type of pension you want to transfer in, certain restrictions and time limits may apply – your administrator will advise you of these.
- 04.
Your administrator will let you know what benefits you could get in firefighters’ pension scheme 2015.
- 05.
You should compare this with the options offered by your previous scheme and decide, within the time limits, if you want to go ahead.
- 06.
Confirm with your administrator your decision.
Transfers in can take time – your administrator will keep you updated throughout the process.
What can be transferred?
Transferring other schemes
The firefighters’ pension scheme 2015 can accept transfers from:
- Another occupational pension scheme registered with HM Revenue and Customs.
- A qualifying recognised overseas pension scheme.
- A personal pension scheme.
Moving between FRAs
Combining your benefits
If you’re leaving employment and joining another fire and rescue authority in England, you should let your new employer know about the pension you have already built up.
If you are moving between fire and rescue authorities in different parts of the UK (for example, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland), your pension will not transfer automatically. You'll need to ask for the pension transfer to be started.
Your fire authority or pension administrator can provide the form you need to complete to start the process. Please ensure you follow the full transfer in process as detailed in the ‘transfer process’ section to ensure your transfer is completed correctly.

Lost pensions
If you have lost details of a previous pension, you can use the Government’s free pension tracing service.
The Government is currently working on a new tool which will help pension scheme members view all pensions, including state pension, in one place. This is called pension dashboards. The dashboards will also allow members to trace lost pensions.
