Automatic enrolment
In this section
Generally, through your contract of employment, you will be enrolled into the firefighters’ pension scheme.
What is automatic enrolment?
Automatic enrolment is a government initiative to help more people save for retirement. It makes sure that all employers offer a workplace pensions scheme to eligible workers.
Generally, through your contract of employment, you will be enrolled into the firefighters’ pension scheme. If you then choose to leave the firefighters’ pension scheme, automatic enrolment would apply.
Does automatic enrolment apply to me?
You’ll be automatically put into the firefighters’ pension scheme 2015 if you:
- Are between age 22 and state pension age
- Earn at least £10,000 a year (before tax is deducted)
- Work in the UK
In some circumstances, your employer might not automatically enrol you – for example if you have handed in your resignation or may exceed a pension tax threshold.
Can I opt out?
You can opt out of the firefighters’ pension scheme 2015 at any time. It is important to think carefully about opting out before you make your decision.

Why have I been re-enrolled?
Your employer must put you back into the firefighters’ pension scheme roughly every three years. The specific timings will depend on your fire and rescue authority.
- You can choose to rejoin the firefighters’ pension scheme at any time if you are eligible.
- If you are re-enrolled and do not want to be a member you can choose to opt out again.
