Instead of the standard awards set out above, a survivor or eligible child could choose to receive a flat rate award. This is the type of award that was provided in the early days of the FPS 1992 when dependants' awards were quite limited. Nowadays it is unlikely that a flat rate award would provide a better pension for a firefighter appointed after the mid-1970s.
