Dependent relative's gratuity

This can be paid at the discretion of the FRA if a member dies in service or after they have retired. It can only be paid to a relative who was substantially dependent on the member at the date of death and who is not entitled to any other award under the scheme. For this rule, "relative" means a husband or wife, civil partner, parent, grandparent, child of the member or any child of these relatives.

This is another provision dating back to when scheme rules did not offer the current level of dependants' awards. In most circumstances nowadays, the husband, wife, civil partner, or child of the member will be entitled to an award under the main provisions of FPS 1992.

The award can be of any amount as long as the total does not exceed the total contributions paid into the scheme by the member.
