What happens now
When it’s time for you to retire, you will be offered a choice between the legacy scheme and reformed scheme benefits for any service between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2022
For now, there is nothing you need to do. Administrators can’t tell you what your benefits will look like under both schemes because the final pension scheme rules are not in place. However, you will be given all the information that you need when it is time to make your choice. In the meantime, the member benefit illustrations show some example calculations.
2022 |
From 1 April all active members continue in the Firefighters' Pension Scheme as members of FPS 2015. |
2023 |
Active members will receive an annual benefit statement by 31 August - it will not yet reflect remedy. If you have left employment but not yet retired, any deferred member statements will not reflect remedy. From 1 October any benefits you built up in the FPS 2015 during the remedy period will be converted into benefits in your original legacy scheme - FPS 1992 or FPS 2006 (standard or special). Pension administrators will begin working out the benefits for all members who have been affected by the 2015 Remedy. |
2024 |
Active members will receive an annual benefit statement by 31 August. The statement will show that you have legacy scheme service for the remedy period. Statements for deferred members will show legacy scheme service for the remedy period. As administrators have 18 months from 1 October 2023 to provide statements showing both legacy and new scheme benefits, this comparison may not yet be available. |
2025 |
By 1 April all affected members will have received an "Remediable Service Statement" or "RSS". This will show your benefits under the legacy scheme and the new scheme during the remedy period. In the future, the RSS will be combined with your annual/ deferred benefit statement and you will receive it every year until you retire. |
Your retirement date |
You will receive a choice of legacy or new scheme benefits as part of your retirement information. |
